To ensure you're prepared for common canine medical emergencies, make sure your first aid kit includes the following:
- 3% hydrogen peroxide (to use in case of poisoning)
- Activated charcoal preparation
- Anti-diarrheal medication
- Antibiotic ointment
- Antihistamine (for anti-itching or use as a sedative)
- Antiseptic soap/solution (for flushing or soaking injuries)
- Bandage tape
- Blunt-tipped tweezers
- Bubble wrap (for creating splints)
- Comfort items for your dog (a toy they like, a blanket for their carrier, etc.)
- Cotton balls
- Elastic bandages
- Electric clippers
- Emergency phone numbers, including your local 24-vet clinic and a poison control hotline (1-888-426-4435)
- Flashlight (to view obstructions in the ear/mouth/nose)
- Hot and cold packs
- Leash and collar (in case your dog's gets damaged in an emergency)
- Magnifying glass (for closer examination of splinters, bites, etc.)
- Muzzle (preferably a soft muzzle)
- Needle-nose pliers (for removing foreign objects)
- Needleless syringe/eyedropper (for administering medications)
- Plastic/saran wrap (to use to seal wounds)
- Rectal thermometer and water-based lubricant
- Scissors
- Sterile gauze pads in multiple sizes
- Stretchable gauze rolls (both 1 and 2 inches)
- Styptic powder (to help stop minor bleeding)
- Syrup of Ipecac (inducing vomiting in case of poisoning)
- Towel or blanket (to warm your dog, immobile them, or use as a stretcher)
- Washcloth
Remember to keep in mind any specific medical issues your dog has, or any additional items you may need for them in an emergency, despite having all the necessary items that ensure your first aid kit is fully stocked.
