Teaching 'Stay'

Puppy Prep
The "stay" command for dogs is used to teach your dog to remain in one place until released. To train your dog to stay:

  • Ask your dog to sit.
  • Show your dog the palm of your hand, with your fingers pointing up, and say, "Stay." in a calm and firm voice
  • Take a few steps back. If your dog stays, mark or click, and reward your dog.
  • Gradually increase the number of steps you take back, moving further away from your dog. Each time they stay, mark or click, and reward them.

Your puppy will naturally want to be near you and follow you when you move away, so remember to be patient and consistent in your training.

When teaching your dog to stay, it's important to add variations to the training session. Instead of always walking back, try moving to the right or left. As your dog gets more comfortable, gradually increase the duration of the stay in 5-second increments. Always remember to reward your dog for obeying the command.
